KATHMANDU: In a remarkable initiative to empower women through sports, a football competition for mothers was held on the occasion of Phagu Purnima at Singa Tatopani, Beni Municipality-4.
The event was organized by the Jalmai Bhagwati Mother’s Group.
Five mother’s groups from Tatopani, Pakhere, and Singa participated in the tournament, with the Jalmai Bhagwati Mother’s Group (A) emerging victorious by defeating the Pakhere Mother’s Group from Mangala Municipality-3, scoring four goals against one.
This winning group secured a cash prize of NPR 15,000.
Meena Jugjali, the secretary of the Jalmai Bhagwati Mother’s Group, shared, “This is the first-ever football competition for mothers in the district, held in Tatopani. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness among mothers and encourage them to become active participants in society through sports.”
The mothers, dressed in traditional attire including lungis, cholas, and kurtas, took to the field to showcase their athleticism.
The event was held in the scenic Tatopani, a region renowned for its natural health spa, and continued the tradition of the Phagu Purnima festival, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm.
Apart from the football match, the festival also featured a variety of other competitions, including Five-a-Side men’s futsal, women’s and men’s tug-of-war, blindfold games, and women’s and men’s chelo (a traditional game).
The event not only promoted sports but also fostered community spirit and women’s empowerment.
