KATHMANDU: US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States will raise tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25 percent starting next week.

Trump announced on Friday through his social media platform, Truth Social, accusing the European Union of failing to fully comply with a previously agreed trade deal between the two sides.

“Based on the fact that the European Union has not respected our full trade agreement, I am announcing that tariffs on EU cars and trucks entering the United States will be increased to 25 percent beginning next week,” Trump wrote.

However, he clarified that vehicles manufactured within the United States would not face any tariff charges.

The warning comes amid ongoing tensions over transatlantic trade policies. Earlier in February, the US Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration’s tariff measures introduced under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act were unconstitutional.

Despite the ruling, the current administration is reportedly seeking to establish a new import tax framework through alternative legal provisions.

According to European statistics agency Eurostat, trade in goods and services between the European Union and the United States reached 1.7 trillion euros (around $2 trillion) in 2024, with daily trade averaging nearly 4.6 billion euros.

The European Union has responded cautiously to Trump’s latest remarks. A spokesperson for the European Commission said on Friday that if Washington takes measures contradicting last year’s joint commitment to a reciprocal, fair and balanced trade relationship, the bloc would keep “all options open” to protect its interests.
