Trump announces extension of Israel–Lebanon ceasefire
The announcement came shortly after a meeting between representatives of both countries at the ambassadorial level.
KATHMANDU: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a three-week extension of the current 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, following high-level diplomatic talks held in Washington on Thursday.
The announcement came shortly after a meeting between representatives of both countries at the ambassadorial level.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, President Trump stated that the United States will assist the Lebanese government in ensuring security against Hezbollah.
Earlier in the day, President Trump met Israeli and Lebanese representatives at the Oval Office.
The meeting was attended by U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and U.S. ambassadors assigned to Israel and Lebanon.
Last week, Trump indicated expectations of separate meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese officials at the White House within the coming weeks, expressing optimism that both sides could reach a broader peace agreement addressing the Hezbollah issue.
The 10-day ceasefire, which came into effect on April 16, followed weeks of cross-border clashes linked to the wider Iran–Israel–U.S. regional tensions.
However, despite the truce, security conditions along southern Lebanon remain fragile, with sporadic tensions still reported.
