KATHMANDU: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has announced a waiver of crop loans up to INR 50,000 taken by small and marginal farmers from cooperative banks, in a major relief measure for the agriculture sector.

In addition to the loan waiver, the Chief Minister also declared an INR 5,000 relief package for larger farmers who have availed crop loans from cooperative banks, according to an official statement posted on the Tamil Nadu government’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account.

The announcement followed a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vijay at the state secretariat on Monday. The meeting was attended by Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister R. Vinoth, Cooperation Minister V. Gandhiraj, Finance Minister N. Mary Wilson, and senior government officials.

According to the government, the decision is expected to benefit approximately 14.22 lakh farmers across the state. The financial implication of the package is estimated at INR 2,044.46 crore.

Officials said the move is aimed at easing financial stress in the farming community and strengthening rural livelihoods amid ongoing economic pressures.
