KATHMANDU: A program has been launched to promote gender equality, empowerment of women and girls in Nepal in joint partnership between the Government of Nepal, the United Nations and the European Union.

The four-year joint national program titled ‘Strong Women, Prosperous Nepal’ was launched today at a special ceremony in Patan, Lalitpur.

The program was jointly launched by Minister of Women, Children, and Senior Citizens Bhagwati Chaudhary, European Union Director of International Partnerships Peteris Ustubs, and UNICEF Nepal representative Elke Wisch.

This program, which is run in collaboration with the federal, provincial, and local governments, is worth $19.5 million USD. This program is said to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in Nepal, as well as work toward realizing the national vision of a prosperous and happy Nepal.

The program will be implemented in the states of Karnali, Madhesh, and Sudurpaschim.

The United Nations’ four agencies, the International Labor Organization, the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and UN Women, will be assisted in various implementation matters.

Minister Chaudhary stated at the launch ceremony that there will be no sustainable development without the empowerment of women and expressed the government’s commitment to providing necessary support in the program’s implementation.
