KATHMANDU: The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Monday that two additional American service members have been confirmed dead following operations linked to Iran, bringing the total number of US fatalities to six.
According to CENTCOM, as of 4:00 p.m. (ET) on March 2, six US troops had been killed in action during ongoing military operations in the region.
The US military said the remains of two soldiers who were previously reported missing have now been recovered from a facility that was struck during Iran’s initial wave of attacks. The soldiers had gone missing after the site came under heavy fire.
In an earlier statement the same day, CENTCOM said American forces had sunk 11 vessels operated by the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy during operations conducted in the Gulf of Oman.
Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply in recent days, raising concerns of a broader regional conflict.
Further details about the identities of the fallen soldiers have not yet been released.
