KATHMANDU: Afghanistan has been hit by devastating flash floods over the past several weeks, causing widespread destruction and worsening the country’s humanitarian crisis.
Homes and farmland have been destroyed, leaving thousands in urgent need of assistance.
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), more than 73,000 people have been affected by recent flooding across 31 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces.
In eastern Nangarhar province alone, disaster management officials confirmed that at least 15 people have died and more than 80 others have been injured due to the latest floods.
The floods have washed away hundreds of acres of agricultural land and destroyed over 7,000 residential homes either fully or partially.
In total, more than 21,000 acres of farmland have been damaged, threatening food security in an already vulnerable country.
Afghanistan, one of the world’s most disaster-prone nations, continues to face escalating climate-related emergencies, further deepening the humanitarian challenges faced by its population.
