KATHMANDU: Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a three-day ceasefire and a large prisoner swap, marking a rare humanitarian breakthrough amid the ongoing war.

The agreement, facilitated by U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative, includes the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side.

Kremlin adviser Yury Ushakov confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin accepted the proposal under Trump’s mediation efforts.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed the deal via social media platform X, stating that preparations for the exchange had been immediately ordered.

The ceasefire is set to take effect from May 9 to May 11. Zelenskyy further noted that Ukrainian forces have been instructed to exclude operations targeting Moscow’s Red Square during Russia’s Victory Day parade on May 9, citing humanitarian considerations.

Russia’s Defense Ministry also announced a temporary halt to all military operations in active combat zones during the same period.
