KATHMANDU: Punjab Kings have scripted history by reaching the IPL final for only the second time in the tournament’s history, defeating Mumbai Indians by five wickets in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday
With this win, Punjab has set up a much-anticipated final clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on June 3.
Chasing a daunting target of 204 runs, Punjab’s captain Shreyas Iyer led from the front with a blistering unbeaten knock of 87 runs off 41 balls, laced with 5 fours and 8 sixes.
His captain’s innings ensured a comfortable chase for the Kings and sealed their spot in the final.
Supporting Iyer’s heroic innings were Nehal Wadhera (48) and Josh Inglis (38), who built crucial partnerships in the middle overs.
Despite Ashwini Kumar picking up 2 wickets for Mumbai, the five-time champions fell short of defending the total.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians posted 203 runs on the board, thanks to valuable contributions from Tilak Varma (44) and Suryakumar Yadav (44), while Jonny Bairstow added 38 runs.
However, Punjab’s pace spearhead Azmatullah Omarzai bowled a brilliant spell, claiming 2 wickets and restricting the scoring momentum at key moments.
