Palmeiras edge Botafogo to reach Club World Cup quarters

KATHMANDU: Palmeiras have secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup after defeating fellow Brazilian side Botafogo 1-0 at Lincoln Financial Field.

The intense match remained goalless through regular time and was decided in extra time when substitute Paulinho netted the decisive goal in the 100th minute.

Entering the pitch in the second half, Paulinho calmly controlled a precise pass from Ricardo Ríos inside the penalty area and slotted home with composure to give Palmeiras the victory.

The win continues Palmeiras’ successful run in the United States, and they will now face the winner of the Benfica vs Chelsea match in the quarterfinals.

That fixture is scheduled for July 4 at the same venue in Philadelphia.
