Minister vows no polygamy bill to be introduced in parliament
Minister Chaurasiya affirmed the government’s commitment to refrain from advancing any legal proposals that may have adverse effects on society.
KATHMANDU: Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya has pledged not to present any bill in parliament that could negatively impact social values and norms, including polygamy.
Responding to questions raised by MPs during the zero and special hour session of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Minister Chaurasiya affirmed the government’s commitment to refrain from advancing any legal proposals that may have adverse effects on society.
He emphasized that no one would agree to enact laws that undermine social justice.
The assurance came amid concerns raised by lawmakers regarding reports of a draft bill seeking to legalize polygamy. Following the publication of news about the government’s draft on polygamy, criticism had intensified.
“I want to express a firm commitment that no bill, including one related to polygamy, which could negatively affect social values and norms, will be introduced in this honorable House,” the minister stated.
He also mentioned that the bill, which includes amendments related to the legal age of marriage and other provisions, has been forwarded to the Legislative Management Committee for further review.
