KATHMANDU: Oman’s Maritime Security Centre has issued a maritime alert after a suspicious object was discovered in the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns that it could potentially be a naval mine.

According to an official statement, the object was spotted floating west of the “inshore traffic zone” within Omani territorial waters.

Authorities have not confirmed its nature but said it is being treated with caution due to the possibility of it being explosive.

The Centre has urged all maritime operators, including vessels, fishing boats, and commercial ships navigating the area, to exercise extreme vigilance.

It also advised maintaining a safe distance from any unidentified objects and immediately reporting such sightings to the relevant authorities.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically critical waterways, plays a vital role in global energy transportation, with a significant portion of international oil shipments passing through it daily.

The alert comes amid growing security sensitivities in the region, where maritime safety has remained a recurring concern due to geopolitical tensions affecting key shipping lanes.
