KATHMANDU: Iraq’s newly appointed Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi has officially assumed office, pledging broad economic reforms and a strong crackdown on corruption as key priorities of his government.

In an address to the nation following his inauguration, issued through the Prime Minister’s office, Al-Zaidi emphasized that his upcoming tenure will focus on addressing Iraq’s pressing challenges through a framework of national partnership and cooperation.

He stated that Iraq’s economy will no longer remain dependent on a single source of revenue, signaling a shift toward diversification. According to the Prime Minister, the government’s reform agenda aims to revive key sectors including industry, agriculture, tourism, and investment to ensure sustainable growth.

Al-Zaidi also vowed to protect public funds and take strict action against all forms of administrative and financial corruption, describing accountability as a central pillar of his administration.

On foreign policy, he stressed efforts to strengthen Iraq’s security and stability, safeguard national sovereignty, and enhance relations with Arab nations and the wider international community based on mutual respect and shared interests.

The formation of the new government was made possible after Iraq’s parliament approved 14 out of 23 cabinet nominees last Thursday, ending a prolonged period of political deadlock and paving the way for the administration to take office.
