KATHMANDU: Bangladesh observed International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, with nationwide rallies and demonstrations demanding stronger labour rights, fair wages, and improved workplace safety.

In the capital Dhaka and other major industrial hubs, thousands of workers took to the streets early Friday, led by various labour unions and trade organisations.

The largest participation came from the country’s key garment sector, where workers form the backbone of Bangladesh’s export-driven economy.

Demonstrators carried colourful banners, placards, and flags while chanting slogans calling for an end to labour exploitation.

They demanded the full implementation of labour laws, safe working conditions, and a significant wage increase to keep pace with rising living costs.

The protests reflected growing concerns among workers over working conditions in one of the world’s largest garment manufacturing industries.

May Day is observed globally on May 1 each year in memory of the historic labour movement that began in Chicago, USA, in 1886, symbolising the long struggle for workers’ rights and dignity.
