AGENCY: DEC. 4 – According to local media reports, India reported its third incidence of the COVID-19 Omicron strain on Saturday.

The case was discovered in the western state of Gujarat’s Jamnagar district.

“A guy who returned from Zimbabwe was detected sick with the Omicron form of coronavirus in Gujarat’s Jamnagar,” according to a local media report citing the Gujarat health department. “This is India’s third Omicron case.”

According to reports, the 72-year-old Jamnagar resident’s sample was sent for genome sequencing after testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.

The federal health ministry said on Thursday that two COVID-19 cases of the Omicron form had been discovered in Karnataka. One is a 46-year-old fully vaccinated doctor from Bengaluru with no travel history, and the other is a 66-year-old South African national with a negative COVID-19 report who arrived in India.

Five others who had contact with the two were also held under watch, and their samples were sent for genomic sequencing, according to officials.

India has already increased testing and surveillance of all arriving overseas travellers, particularly those from high-risk countries.
