KATHMANDU: The new government of Hungary, led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, has taken oath in parliament on Tuesday in the capital Budapest.

Earlier the same day, President Tamás Sulyok officially appointed the new cabinet ministers.

Addressing parliament, Prime Minister Magyar outlined his administration’s key priorities, including restoring public trust in state institutions, improving governance, and strengthening Hungary’s international relations.

He emphasized that the government would operate on transparency and clear accountability to rebuild citizens’ confidence. On foreign policy, he pledged to protect national interests within the European Union and NATO while further strengthening ties with Western allies.

The new cabinet consists of 16 members, with the ministries of finance, health, education and child affairs, and justice given enhanced authority and central roles. These four ministries have also been granted veto powers within the cabinet decision-making process.

The political shift follows the April 12 parliamentary elections, where Magyar’s Tisza Party secured a two-thirds majority in parliament, defeating the ruling Fidesz–KDNP coalition led by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Magyar was formally elected as Prime Minister in a parliamentary vote last Saturday before taking the oath of office.
