KATHMANDU: Medical education reform activist Dr. Govinda KC has demanded the government withdraw its decision to admit a Gen Z protest injury victim into MBBS studies, warning of a renewed hunger strike if the move is not reversed.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Dr. KC argued that the decision violates Nepal’s medical education law, which mandates merit-based admission for medical studies.

He strongly objected to the government’s move to provide free MBBS education to protest injured student Asha Shah, a decision approved by the Medical Education Commission on March 15.

The government had earlier defended the decision, with the Ministry of Education stating on Saturday that the arrangement was not against existing rules.

However, Dr. KC criticized the ministry’s stance, questioning whether officials were disregarding or misinterpreting the law.

Calling both the decision and the ministry’s explanation unacceptable, Dr. KC urged the authorities to revoke them immediately.

He also reiterated his long-standing demand for full implementation of past agreements aimed at reforming Nepal’s health and education sectors.

Dr. KC warned that failure to act would compel him to launch a new round of hunger strike-led protests.
