KATHMANDU: Gokarneshwar Municipality has initiated a sterilization campaign aimed at controlling the growing population of stray dogs in the municipal area and reducing risks of road accidents, rabies, and other zoonotic diseases.

The campaign is being carried out at the old health post building in Ward No. 1, where stray dogs collected from various wards are undergoing permanent sterilization.

A technical team deployed by the municipality is handling dog capture, health screening, and surgical sterilization procedures performed by veterinary surgeons.

With the support of local residents, dogs are being brought from different neighborhoods, sterilized, treated, and safely released back to their respective areas in a managed manner.

Officials say the initiative is expected to significantly reduce risks for pedestrians, motorists, schoolchildren, and the wider community.

The program is also seen as an important step toward promoting human-animal coexistence and ensuring a safer, more organized urban environment.
