KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has begun a free screening programme for breast, uterine and cervical cancers at Bir Hospital.

The campaign was officially inaugurated on Monday by Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol, who underscored the growing risk of cervical and breast cancers among women and stressed the need for early detection.

Dangol said timely diagnosis significantly increases the chances of successful treatment, warning that delays often result in patients reaching advanced stages of the disease. She also highlighted low awareness, along with fear and social stigma, as key barriers preventing many women from seeking screening.

“Women often prioritise their family’s health over their own,” she noted, urging them to break that pattern and undergo regular check-ups. “A healthy woman is the foundation of a healthy family.”

According to the metropolitan office, women can register for the service through health promotion centres in their respective wards. A queue-based appointment system has been introduced to minimise waiting times.

The programme has already seen encouraging participation, with 136 women screened on the first day alone. Officials expect the number of beneficiaries to rise steadily in the coming weeks.

Building on last year’s successful collaboration with Bir Hospital, the city plans to expand and further streamline the initiative. The screening campaign will run until May 3.
