KATHMANDU: Five Ebola patients have recovered in the town of Bunia in northeastern Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), health authorities have confirmed.

The recovered individuals include four nurses and other healthcare workers along with one laboratory staff member, according to the National Institute of Public Health of the DRC. Director-General Dr. Dieudonné Mwamba Kazadi said four health workers were officially discharged from an Ebola treatment centre in Bunia after testing negative twice for the virus. The laboratory staff member had already recovered earlier.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited Bunia for the inauguration of a new Ebola treatment facility. He praised the survivors for their resilience, calling their recovery a sign of renewed hope in the fight against the outbreak, and expressed gratitude to frontline health workers risking their lives.

According to the DRC Ministry of Health, as of May 29, a total of 263 Ebola cases have been confirmed nationwide, with 42 reported deaths. Health Minister Roger Kamba said surveillance, contact tracing, and laboratory testing have been significantly intensified to contain the outbreak.

However, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Director-General Jean Kaseya noted that laboratory results for more than 1,100 samples were still pending as of May 30, indicating ongoing uncertainty in the scale of the outbreak.

The Ebola outbreak continues to be closely monitored as health authorities work to prevent further spread.
