Champions Barcelona end La Liga season in style with 3-0 victory

KATHMANDU: Champions Barcelona wrapped up their La Liga season in style with a commanding 3-0 win over Athletic Club on Sunday, powered by a brace from star striker Robert Lewandowski.

Already crowned champions with two games to spare, Barcelona capped off a remarkable season with their 28th league title.

Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 14th minute, marking his 100th goal in La Liga with a stunning chip over goalkeeper Unai Simón.

Just three minutes later, the Polish forward doubled the lead with a powerful header from Raphinha’s corner. The goals marked Lewandowski’s 27th in the league and 40th across all competitions this season.

Substitute Dani Olmo sealed the win in stoppage time, calmly converting a penalty in the fourth minute of injury time.

Barcelona ended the season with 28 wins, 4 draws, and 88 points—four clear of second-placed Real Madrid.

German manager Hansi Flick enjoyed a dream debut season in Spain, guiding Barcelona to a domestic treble—La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.

Despite Barcelona’s dominance in the first half, Athletic had two clear chances to cut the deficit, both squandered by 24-year-old striker Mikel Sancet.

He failed to convert from close range after a cross from Unai Núñez and later fired wide with only goalkeeper Iñaki Peña to beat after a pass from captain Óscar de Marcos.

Lewandowski had opportunities to complete his hat-trick early in the second half but couldn’t find the net again.

He finishes the La Liga season as the second-highest scorer behind Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé, who scored 31 goals.

Athletic Club, who had already secured Champions League qualification, finished the season in fourth place.
