KATHMANDU: Reigning champions Liverpool suffered a shock defeat on Monday in the English Premier League as Brighton staged a remarkable comeback to claim a 3-2 victory at the Amex Stadium.

Despite twice taking the lead, Liverpool couldn’t hold on.

Substitute Jack Hinshelwood became the hero for Brighton, netting the decisive goal in the 85th minute with a clinical header from Matt O’Riley’s cross.

The goal, initially ruled offside, was awarded after a VAR check.

Liverpool opened the scoring early in the 9th minute through Harvey Elliott.

Brighton responded in the 32nd minute when Yasin Ayari leveled the match with a composed finish.

Just before halftime, Dominik Szoboszlai restored Liverpool’s lead with a goal in first-half injury time. But Brighton equalized again in the 69th minute through Kaoru Mitoma, setting up a tense finish.

Hinshelwood’s late strike sealed a dramatic win, lifting Brighton to eighth place on the league table, three points ahead of Brentford.

Brighton will wrap up their Premier League season on Sunday with a final match against Tottenham.
