KATHMANDU: A confirmed outbreak of bird flu in Sunsari has led to the culling of poultry across 23 commercial farms, dealing a severe blow to the district’s poultry industry.

The infection was confirmed following laboratory tests conducted by the Central Veterinary Disease Investigation Laboratory. Authorities immediately began large-scale containment and culling operations.

According to Dr. Manoj Mahato, Chief of the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Service Expert Centre in Sunsari, the outbreak has caused losses exceeding Rs 300 million.

Officials said the infection has been spreading for nearly a month, pushing poultry farmers into heavy financial distress.

So far, around 145,000 chickens have been destroyed. This includes 217,000 layers, 16,853 breeder broilers, 44,550 broilers, and approximately 226,530 eggs. In addition, infected birds, ducks, turkeys, chicks, feed, cartons, and crates have also been disposed of as part of biosecurity measures.

Affected farms have been sealed, and movement restrictions are being enforced in infected zones to prevent further spread.

The outbreak has significantly disrupted poultry production in Sunsari, once a growing hub for egg and meat self-sufficiency. The district is now expected to rely again on external supply sources to meet demand.
