KATHMANDU: Authorities have confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1), commonly known as bird flu, across several wards of Gokarneshwar Municipality, prompting an urgent public health and veterinary response.

According to municipal officials, infections have been detected in Wards 2, 3, and 4, where containment operations are already underway.

Infected poultry, including chickens, ducks, quails, and guinea fowl, along with eggs and feed materials, are being safely culled and disposed of by burial to prevent further spread.

Disinfection drives are also being carried out in affected zones.

The municipality has restricted movement in and out of poultry farms, barring unnecessary entry of people and vehicles.

Strict biosecurity protocols have been enforced, requiring mandatory disinfection at entry points.

Officials have also instructed farm workers not to move between different farms to reduce cross-contamination risks.

Kathmandu authorities say additional monitoring has been intensified in surrounding areas as a precautionary measure, while veterinary teams continue surveillance and response operations.

Preventive Measures Issued by Authorities

  • Immediate culling and safe burial of infected or exposed poultry and eggs
  • Mandatory disinfection of poultry farms and equipment
  • Strict restriction on farm access for outsiders and vehicles
  • Farm workers prohibited from visiting multiple poultry farms
  • Use of separate boots, aprons, and protective gear inside poultry sheds
  • Regular disinfection of poultry sheds and surroundings
  • Ban on reuse of egg trays and contaminated materials without sterilization
  • Prevention of entry of dogs, cats, and rodents into farm areas
  • Proper cooking of poultry meat and eggs before consumption
  • Immediate reporting of sudden poultry deaths or illness to veterinary authorities

Officials have urged farmers and residents to remain vigilant and report any unusual poultry deaths immediately to local veterinary service centers.
