70 killed in Turkey road accidents during Eid al-Adha holiday
President Erdoğan said the fatalities occurred in multiple traffic accidents recorded nationwide as millions of people travelled to visit families and holiday destinations during the extended break.
KATHMANDU: Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has reported that at least 70 people were killed in road accidents across Turkey during the nine-day Eid al-Adha holiday period, marking one of the country’s major annual religious breaks.
Speaking on Monday, President Erdoğan said the fatalities occurred in multiple traffic accidents recorded nationwide as millions of people travelled to visit families and holiday destinations during the extended break.
Despite the tragic toll, Erdoğan noted a decline in the number of deadly road accidents compared to previous years. He attributed the improvement to a series of enhanced safety measures introduced across the country, including the construction of new highways, stricter traffic enforcement, aerial monitoring of roads, and restrictions on heavy vehicle movement during peak travel periods.
Authorities have been carrying out intensified traffic inspections throughout the holiday period, aiming to reduce speeding, reckless driving, and congestion-related risks.
While the overall fatality count remains high, officials say the downward trend signals gradual progress in road safety management during major holiday travel seasons in Turkey.
