KATHMANDU: Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s government is set to face a crucial confidence vote in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly today, with political equations intensifying ahead of the floor test.

Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), requires at least 118 votes to secure a majority. His party holds 108 MLAs, while additional support from the Congress, VCK, Indian Union Muslim League, and Left parties adds up to 13 legislators, taking the declared backing close to the required threshold.

In a significant development, a faction of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) announced support for the Vijay-led government during a press conference held in Chennai’s MRC Nagar. AIADMK leader C.V. Shanmugam said the decision was passed after internal deliberations to back the confidence motion.

However, the AIADMK has simultaneously issued a whip directing all its 47 MLAs to vote against the government, signaling a sharp internal and political contradiction within the opposition camp.
