KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT) has cautioned the public against using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to access unregistered or restricted social media platforms in Nepal.

The ministry stated that, following government directives, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority has instructed mobile and internet service providers to block access to platforms that are not officially registered.

Officials emphasized that bypassing these restrictions through VPNs is unsafe, unauthorized, and poses serious security risks.

As of Sept 7, two companies — Smart Idea Pvt. Ltd. (Hamro Patro) and Global Diary Pvt. Ltd. — have been officially registered and activated.

MoCIT urged internet users to prioritize safety and avoid risky VPN usage when attempting to access restricted platforms.
