Messi buys Spanish Club UE Cornellà
The 38-year-old, currently playing for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, is said to have taken ownership of the club as part of a long-term sporting and business project.
KATHMANDU: Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has reportedly acquired Spanish fifth-division club UE Cornellà, a move that has generated fresh excitement within Spanish football circles.
The 38-year-old, currently playing for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, is said to have taken ownership of the club as part of a long-term sporting and business project.
Following the development, Messi is reported to have sent a video message to the team members, expressing his commitment and support for the club’s future growth.
His return in an ownership role to Catalonia—where he spent his formative years after joining Barcelona at the age of 13—has been warmly received by local fans and supporters.
According to club sources, the investment is intended as a gradual development project focused on strengthening the club’s infrastructure, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability.
UE Cornellà is currently competing in promotion playoffs, aiming to move up to Spain’s fourth division.
Fans and football analysts believe that investment from global icons like Messi could significantly boost the financial stability and structural development of lower-tier football clubs. His involvement is also expected to enhance the club’s visibility and scouting reputation.
UE Cornellà is well known for its strong youth development system, having produced several professional players including Jordi Alba, David Raya, Gerard Martín, and Javi Puado, who began their early careers at the club.
With Messi’s reported involvement, supporters expect the club’s talent development pathway to strengthen further, potentially creating smoother transitions for young players to top Spanish clubs such as Barcelona, Espanyol, and Girona.
