KATHMANDU: Manish Suman, leader of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal, has expressed concerns over the recent agreement between the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra “Balen” Shah. While he acknowledged that the deal was natural, he criticized it for failing to include fundamental issues such as federalism and secularism.

Speaking in Janakpur on Sunday, Suman said the agreement between the two powers aligns with the demands of the Gen Z movement and the public’s desire for change from the status quo. However, he alleged that RSP President Rabi Lamichhane and Mayor Shah were reluctant to include federalism and secularism in the agreement.

He added that while having a popular figure like Balen join RSP is a fortunate development for the party, it does not align with RSP’s policy framework.

“It seems natural that the agreement was made, given the public demand to transform the country from the existing state, as advocated by the Gen Z movement. But in the process, they overlooked federalism and secularism. It feels as if they were shy to include these issues in the deal,” Suman said.

Suman further criticized RSP for being involved in activities opposing federalism. He highlighted that RSP has not consistently supported secularism and has avoided participating in provincial assembly elections, raising doubts about the party’s commitment.

Commenting on RSP’s political strategy, Suman remarked, “In a situation where elections have not even been held, announcing a candidate for Prime Minister seems absurd.”
