KATHMANDU: A new musical short film titled “Jhyal: The Window Between Us” has been released, drawing emotional inspiration  from the first COVID-19 lockdown period.

Produced under the banner of Art Ghar, the 8-minute 57-second poetic drama is written and directed by Bishma Joshi.

The film delicately explores themes of isolation, emotional distance, and silent human connections formed during one of the most uncertain times in recent history.

The story follows 38-year-old teacher Ritu, who struggles with loneliness inside her home while managing online classes, daily household routines, and waiting for her husband, who is stuck outside the city due to lockdown restrictions.

As her life becomes increasingly monotonous and emotionally heavy, she begins to notice a struggling young actor, Mausam, living in a nearby building.

Though physically separated, the two develop a silent emotional bond through exchanged glances and subtle gestures from their respective windows. The “window” becomes a powerful symbol of longing, distance, and unspoken relationships.

However, as the lockdown eventually lifts and Ritu’s husband returns home, the fragile connection formed through isolation remains only as a memory.

Director Bishma Joshi stated that the film portrays the pandemic not just as a tragedy, but as a deeply reflective period where people rediscovered emotions, relationships, and themselves.

The film features performances by Usha Rajak, Abhishek Phuyal, and director Joshi himself. Cinematography is handled by Narayan GC, while editing is done by Biken Karki.

Adding a musical dimension, the film includes lyrics by the director, music composed by Subin Century, and vocals by Samiksha Dahal and Pratap Das, enhancing its emotional depth.

Art Ghar has previously released other musical short films such as “Kotha” and “Samaya Ra Umer.”
