KATHMANDU: Torrential rains have triggered sudden flash floods across Afghanistan, leaving at least 77 people dead and 137 others injured, authorities confirmed.

According to the country’s National Disaster Management Authority, the floods have caused widespread destruction, with 3,466 homes either completely or partially damaged. Infrastructure has also been severely impacted, as approximately 337 kilometers of roads were washed away.

The disaster has submerged around 11,676 acres of farmland, raising concerns over food security and livelihoods. In addition, 121 water canals and irrigation systems have been damaged, further affecting agricultural activities.

At least 5,811 families have been displaced due to the flooding, forcing many to seek temporary shelter.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Meteorological Department has warned of more heavy rainfall in the coming days, heightening the risk of further flooding—especially in remote and vulnerable regions. Authorities have urged residents in high-risk areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
