KATHMANDU: The government has launched an “Election Cyber Police Cell” to monitor and control misinformation, rumors, and other activities on digital platforms that could affect the upcoming elections.
Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Home Secretary Rajkumar Shrestha, and spokesperson Anand Kafle announced the cell’s activation on Tuesday.
Operating in coordination with the Election Commission, the cyber cell will track suspicious online activity, regulate content, and report any concerns to the commission.
According to officials, the cell will identify rumors, misleading information, and election-related violations circulating on social media and online platforms.
Verified false content will be removed using technological tools, and legal action will be taken against offenders as per the law.
Kafle emphasized that district police offices across the country will conduct close monitoring of digital platforms. “Preventing misuse of digital media is a major challenge in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections,” he said, highlighting the cell’s critical role in safeguarding the electoral process.
The Home Ministry stated that through close coordination between the police and the Election Commission, the cyber cell aims to curb disinformation, block misleading content, and secure the integrity of Nepal’s elections.
