271 security personnel withdrawn from VIP & VVIP protection duty
Ministry initiated a review of security deployments and began recalling personnel assigned in violation of the prescribed criteria.
KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Home Affairs has withdrawn 271 security personnel who were deployed beyond the official standards for the protection of VIPs and VVIPs.
Following a ministerial-level decision on Ashoj 23, the ministry initiated a review of security deployments and began recalling personnel assigned in violation of the prescribed criteria.
According to Ministry Spokesperson and Joint Secretary Anand Kafle, a total of 271 security personnel have been recalled so far — including 174 from Nepal Police and 74 from the Armed Police Force.
As per the Special Persons Security Management Procedure 2077, a former Prime Minister is entitled to a maximum of 16 Armed Police and 2 Nepal Police personnel for security. However, former Prime Ministers and party leaders Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and KP Sharma Oli had been using nearly double the allowed number of security staff.
Several other current and former high-profile individuals were also found to be availing security beyond the set standards. The recalled personnel were among those deployed in such excessive security arrangements.
