KATHMANDU: Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in the southern part of the country following a prolonged political crisis in Rivers State.

Tinubu explained that the declaration of the emergency was necessary, citing the provisions of Section 305 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.

Before the declaration, the leadership of Rivers State’s local government, which included the governor and most members of the state legislature, had been under intense pressure, with reports indicating the executive branch was at risk of collapse.

The political deadlock, which has been escalating since 2023, has led to growing unrest.

Armed groups, suspected of being involved in terrorism, have threatened to attack several oil installations in the state.

Tinubu emphasized that the state of emergency is aimed at restoring peace and order in Rivers State and addressing the ongoing instability.
