KATHMANDU: Over 1.3 million adolescent girls have been vaccinated within 12 days as part of the HPV vaccine campaign run by the Ministry of Health and Population.

According to Dr. Vivek Kumar Lal, Chief of the Family Welfare Division at the Department of Health Services, this milestone was achieved by Saturday, the 12th day of the campaign.

Health Minister Pradeep Paudel expressed gratitude to all healthcare workers, volunteers, and partner schools who have contributed tirelessly to the campaign’s success.

The initiative, which began on Feb 4, will continue until Feb 18.

The campaign targets girls in grades 6 to 10 and those aged 10 to 14, providing the vaccine through local centers.

Dr. Prakash Budhathoki, spokesperson for the Ministry, stated that efforts will be made to vaccinate those who have missed the opportunity, with a goal to vaccinate 1.7 million girls by the end of the campaign.

Minister Poudel’s first major decision upon assuming office was the approval of the National Cancer Control Strategy.

Since then, efforts to provide cancer treatment across all provinces have been implemented.

As part of this, the HPV vaccination program has been prioritized to prevent cervical cancer, a leading cause of death among women in Nepal.
