KATHMANDU: Feb 14 marks Valentine’s Day, a special occasion celebrated globally, including in Nepal, by romantic couples with great enthusiasm.

As the final of the week-long Valentine’s celebrations, couples exchange gifts and express their love on this significant day.

Over time, Valentine’s Day has evolved into a widely recognized celebration of love.

The day is believed to commemorate Saint Valentine, who was executed for advocating love and marriage. It is observed every year on Feb 14 in his memory.

The origins of this day trace back to the 3rd century in Rome, during the reign of Emperor Claudius. He held the belief that marriage weakened a man’s strength and intellect, leading him to ban marriages for soldiers and officials.

However, Saint Valentine opposed this decree and secretly officiated numerous marriages.

Enraged by his defiance, Emperor Claudius sentenced Valentine to death on Feb 14, 269 AD. Before his execution, Saint Valentine wrote a heartfelt letter to the blind daughter of his jailer, signing it, “From Your Valentine.” He also sent her flowers as a token of love and, before dying, requested that his eyes be donated to her.

Since then, Valentine’s Day has been celebrated in his honor, symbolizing love and devotion. On this day, couples exchange gifts such as flowers, cards, and chocolates.

Many also take the opportunity to confess their love and strengthen their relationships.

In recent years, Valentine’s Week has gained popularity, with themed celebrations leading up to the main day:

  • February 7: Rose Day
  • February 8: Propose Day
  • February 9: Chocolate Day
  • February 10: Teddy Day
  • February 11: Promise Day
  • February 12: Kiss Day
  • February 13: Hug Day
  • February 14: Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day remains a cherished occasion for expressing love, deepening relationships, and celebrating romance worldwide.
