KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel, the Commander-in-Chief of the Nepal Army, conferred the honorary rank of General of the Nepal Army to Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.

The ceremony took place today at the President’s Office, Sheetal Niwas, Kathmandu.

General Dwivedi arrived in Nepal on Wednesday at the invitation of Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel.

The event was attended by Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Defense Minister Manveer Rai, and other dignitaries.

This tradition of conferring honorary ranks between the armies of Nepal and India dates back to 1950. Both nations honor each other’s Army Chiefs to strengthen military ties.

Previously, on 5 Sept 2022, then-Indian President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army on former Nepal Army Chief General Prabhu Ram Sharma.

Similarly, on September 5, 2022, former President Bidya Devi Bhandari awarded the honorary General title of the Nepal Army to Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande.

The tradition began in 1950 when Nepal conferred the honorary rank to India’s General KM Cariappa, and India reciprocated in 1969 by honoring Nepal’s then-Army Chief General Surendra Bahadur Shah.

This tradition is considered a vital link in fostering harmonious relations and strengthening ties between the two neighboring armies.
