KATHMANDU: On the occasion of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, also known as Kaag Tihar, people are worshiping crows with various offerings on Wednesday.

According to the Panchang Decision Committee, Trayodashi tithi will last until Saturday, precisely until 1:05 PM, which is 17 ghadi and 8 pala in traditional units of time. Committee Chairperson Prof. Shrikrishna Adhikari explained that Tuesday marks the beginning of Trayodashi according to these time measurements.

In Hindu tradition, crows are revered as the messengers of Yamaraj, the god of death, and are worshipped on the first day of Yam Panchak.

Crows are believed to deliver messages from Yamaraj, and people interpret good or bad news based on the crow’s calls.

There is a belief that crows can forewarn natural disasters, like earthquakes, due to their perceived alertness and intelligence.

The worship of crows is also rooted in their practical role as helpers to farmers by eating crop pests, and they help keep the environment clean by consuming waste.

In the Vedic Sanatan tradition, Kartik Krishna Trayodashi is not the only day dedicated to crows.

There is a daily practice of feeding crows and dogs before taking one’s morning meal as a sign of respect and gratitude towards these animals.
