KATHMANDU: The gates of the Kulekhani First Hydropower Project reservoir, located in Indrasarovar Rural Municipality, Makawanpur, have been closed after being opened earlier due to the reservoir exceeding its water capacity.

On Saturday morning, two gates were opened to release excess water from the reservoir to ensure the safety of the dam after the water level surpassed the maximum limit.

However, after the water level receded, the gates were closed today, according to Tara Dutta Bhatta, Chief of the Kulekhani First Hydropower Project.

He stated that the reservoir has a total capacity of 1,530 millimeters, but the water level had reached 1,531 millimeters on Saturday, prompting the decision to open the gates due to the potential danger.

Following the reduction in water levels, Bhatt reported that the hydropower plant is now operating at full capacity.

Meanwhile, with the rainfall subsiding, efforts have begun to clear the landslides that disrupted the Hetauda-Kathmandu and Hetauda-Sindhuli roads.

Chief District Officer Tirtharaj Chiluwal informed that the Department of Roads and security agencies have been working since early morning to clear the Kantipath and Bhimphedi-Dakshinkali sections of the Hetauda-Kathmandu road.

Additionally, Chiluwal mentioned that efforts are ongoing to clear landslides from various sections of the Madan Bhandari Highway to restore regular traffic flow.
