KATHMANDU: Jordan’s Independent Electoral Commission Chair, Musa Maytah, has announced the preliminary results of the country’s 20th parliamentary elections.
The Commission’s board of commissioners has decided to approve the preliminary results of local and general district elections, which will be published in the official gazette as final results.
In Tuesday’s election, over 1.6 million out of 5.1 million eligible voters participated, representing a voter turnout of 32.13%.
Through the quota system, 27 female seats, including 18 reserved seats, have been secured in the parliament.
This has effectively doubled the previous legislative representation of women.
Six youth candidates have been elected. Candidates affiliated with 31 parties have won 104 seats.
This election is the first under Jordan’s new electoral law introduced in 2022, which increased the number of parliament seats from 130 to 138 with a goal of enhancing representation of women and youth.
The final results will be published in the official gazette in the coming days.
