KATHMANDU: Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav has underlined the need for coordinated efforts among the government, private sector and development partners to ensure the citizens’ rights to food enshrined by the Constitution as a fundamental right.
While inaugurating the Nepal Food Forum-2024 organised jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation here today, the Vice President called for communities who are vulnerable in terms of food security should be included in the Forum.
Highlighting an opportunity for a new partnership in the promotion of the right to food given by the Forum, he urged the Forum to deliver meaningfully.
The Vice President also described the agricultural sector as the backbone of the country’s economy.
Stating that climate change, increasing departure of youth for foreign jobs, and diminishing interests of youths for an engagement in agricultural activities have posed additional challenges to this sector, he said the issues be addressed through policies and programmes.
He said he is encouraged to see the significant presence of youths in the Forum, hoping that the event will be successful in promoting the country’s food sufficiency. The forum is attended by 500 representatives from government and non-government sectors, including youths.
