KATHMANDU: Spain triumphed in the UEFA Nations League after defeating Switzerland 4-1 in a thrilling match on Sunday night. Fabian Ruiz was the standout player for Spain, netting two goals, while Joselu and Ferran Torres each added one to secure the win. Switzerland’s Mohamed Zeki Amdouni managed to pull one goal back for his team.
Despite being reduced to 10 men when Robin Le Normand received a red card in the 20th minute, Spain maintained control throughout the game. With this victory, Spain now has four points from two matches in Group D. This marks Switzerland’s second consecutive loss in the competition, following their defeat to Denmark. Spain had previously drawn 0-0 against Serbia.
In the same group, Denmark continued their winning streak with a 2-0 victory over Serbia. This back-to-back win puts Denmark at the top of the group with six points from two games.
Elsewhere in the league, Portugal secured a 2-1 victory over Scotland, marking their second consecutive win. Playing on Scotland’s home ground, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes each scored one goal, with Ronaldo’s decisive strike coming just two minutes before full time.
Portugal now leads Group A with six points, topping the table. Meanwhile, Croatia edged past their opponent with a 1-0 win, thanks to a stunning free-kick by Luka Modric.
The Real Madrid midfielder scored his 27th goal in 180 appearances for his country.
Croatia had suffered a 2-1 defeat against Portugal in their opening Nations League match on Thursday but came back strong against their next opponent.
Despite creating several chances, Duje Caleta-Car and Modric couldn’t capitalize in the first half, which ended goalless. Croatia and Poland now both have three points in the race for second place in their group.
