Bangladesh SC bar Chair urges India to extradite ex-PM Hasina
Sheikh Hasina Wazed, the former Prime Minister, was forced to flee to India by helicopter.
KATHMANDU: In a recent press conference, A.M. Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Chair of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), has urged India to take action in response to the current political turmoil in Bangladesh.
Khokon called for the arrest and extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana, attributing their responsibility for the repression and deaths of hundreds of innocent people in the country.
Khokon, who is also the Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), criticized the current government’s extreme measures, including the declaration of a state of emergency.
He urged the judges of the Supreme Court, who are involved in political activities and corruption, to resign within a week. Khokon also demanded the release of all political prisoners detained on grounds of faith.
The protests, initially sparked by opposition to the reservation (quota) system led by students, had evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations due to the ruling party’s extreme stance.
As a result, Sheikh Hasina Wazed, the former Prime Minister, was forced to flee to India by helicopter.
Meanwhile, President Mohammad Shahabuddin has directed the dissolution of Parliament to pave the way for an interim government led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus.
This move is intended to address the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh.
