Food department urges not to consume cotton candy as it contains ‘Rhodamine B’

KATHMANDU: Cotton candy contains the inedible color ‘Rhodamine B’, hence Department of Food Technology recommended for not to consume it.

According to Krishna Mohan Maharjan, spokesperson for the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control, the colorful cotton candies sold in street stalls and fairs throughout Kathmandu contain Rhodamine B, an inedible dye with serious health consequences.

He further ordered that the cotton candy, which was being sold and distributed publicly, not be consumed by him or given to his children.

The department has also requested everyone not to produce and sell cotton candy using inedible colors.

“If it is found that the production and sale of cotton candy using non-edible dyes has been reported somewhere, everyone will be informed about the action that will be taken according to the rules of the Food Act,” said the notice issued by the department.

Dr. Pankaj Rai, Director of Kanti Children’s Hospital, stated that cotton candy contains a high sugar content, natural chemicals, and non-edible components, which has a direct impact on children’s health.

According to him, cotton candy promotes teeth decay, weight gain, memory loss, and urine staining.
