KATHMANDU: On the occasion of World Recycling Day, Coca-Cola Nepal and Doko Recyclers announced the installation of 15 informative PET Collection Bins throughout Kathmandu Valley and Bharatpur.

This initiative is the second phase of the joint project “Refresh and Recycle,” which began in August 2020 with the support of local governments.

The “Refresh & Recycle” project is a PET bottle collection campaign that aims to raise awareness and educate communities about giving new life to PET bottles through recycling.

The bins will be placed in densely populated areas where PET bottles are frequently discarded in 9 Kathmandu locations and 6 Bharatapur locations.

“‘Refresh & Recycle 2023’ is more than a project; it’s a change we want to instill in every Nepalese mind to learn basic plastic bottle segregation – redirecting PET bottles from trash cans and recycling them for a better and safer environment.”

We are delighted to be a part of Coca-Cola Beverages Nepal’s dedication to the global mission of World Without Waste. “As Doko Recyclers, we will recycle all of the collected PET bottles in our Material Recovery Facility in Sanothimi, Bhaktapur,” says Raghavendra Mahto, Co-founder of Doko Recyclers.

Mr. Deepak Senthil, Managing Director of Bottlers Nepal Limited shared, “Coca-Cola is driving various recycling and reuse initiatives across the world with a global commitment for a ‘World Without Waste’. The Company has pledged to collect and recycle the equivalent of 100 percent of its packaging worldwide, by 2030. As a part of this commitment, we have placed PET Recycling bins in high footfall areas in Kathmandu Valley & Bharatpur, as a part of our sustainability efforts to bring positive changes in behavior from the ground level.”

Mrs. Muna Rai, Store Manager of Bhatbhateni Supermarket, Patan expressed, “Wishing everyone a Happy World Recycling Day. As much as it is our right to live in a clean environment, it is also our responsibility to keep our own environment clean. We would like to express our gratitude to Coca-Cola Beverages Nepal whom we have been working together for a long time and Doko Recyclers for making this possible in BBSM, Patan.”

Consumers are encouraged to dispose of their PET bottles in the PET collection bins whenever they visit any of these locations as part of this initiative.

Before disposing of bottles, consumers should ensure that they are empty, clean, and preferably crushed. More information about proper disposal and recycling of PET bottles is also displayed on the bins for public awareness.

PET bottles have intrinsic value and cannot be considered waste. PET plastic is safe, lightweight, cost-effective, transparent, shapeable, and completely recyclable.

Doko Recyclers collects the bottles from the bins once a week, sorts them, and then transports them to a PET recovery facility to begin the recycling process.

PET materials can be recycled and manufactured into new bottles and containers, as well as used in fiber applications such as clothing and carpeting.

Doko Recyclers has collected and recovered approximately 2195 Kgs of PET bottles since its placements.

Coca-Cola announced World Without Waste in 2018, with the goal of collecting and recycling the equivalent of all bottles and cans produced by 2030.

Coca-Cola in Nepal has undertaken many recycling initiatives such as “Refresh and Recycle” in order to achieve the “World Without Waste” objectives in the coming decade through its various projects such as Nagarmitra, Recycler Saathi, and Swachhta Sarathi.
