Lamichhane taken into custody, appearing in court only on Sunday

KATHMANDU: Sandeep Lamichhane, the former national cricket team captain who was arrested on rape charges, is being held in police circle Gaushala. Sandeep was arrested at Tribhuvan International Airport on Thursday morning after disembarking from a Qatar Airways flight.

Sandeep, who was transferred from Gaushala to Kathmandu Medical College in Sinamangal for a medical examination, has been returned to Police Circle Gaushala. On Sunday, he will appear in court. As of the Dashain holiday, the court is closed today and tomorrow. He is expected to be produced for an extension after the court opens on Sunday.

Sandeep, who went to Kenya as the national team’s captain on Aug 22, returned to the country after nearly a month and a half as a rape suspect. On Aug 21, before leaving for Kenya, the minor filed a complaint against her.

On Sept 6, a minor filed a complaint at Gaushala police circle alleging that Sandeep had repeatedly raped her. The Kathmandu District Court issued an arrest warrant for Sandeep a few days later. For nearly two weeks, Nepal Police had issued a diffuse notice against him.

Saroj Krishna Ghimire, Sandeep’s lawyer, was denied permission to appear in court. While abroad, Sandeep stated that he would surrender and fight a legal battle to prove his instructions.

Sandeep has also stated his willingness to assist in the investigation of the allegations leveled against him. He has also stated that he believes he will receive justice and that he will soon return to playing cricket for the country.
