Sri Lankan ruling party loses majority in parliament

COLOMBO: APRIL. 5 – The ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) lost its parliamentary majority on Tuesday when 42 members of parliament (MPs) announced their intention to sit separately.

Among the 42 MPs are 14 from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, 10 from government constituent parties, and 12 from the SLPP, among others.

In the 2020 general election, the ruling SLPP-led coalition won 146 seats in the 225-member parliament.
