KATHMANDU: SEPT. 15 – Kathmandu Medical College, located at Sinamangal, has opened the largest and most advanced neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit in Nepal. KMC has run a state-of-the-art intensive care unit for newborns and pediatric patients using equipment that is not yet in use in Nepal.

KMC Chairman Dr Sunil Sharma informed that a 40-bed neonatal intensive care unit and a 10-bed pediatric intensive care unit have been set up for the treatment of children. We have operated the country’s largest intensive care unit for the treatment of children in Nepal using state-of-the-art equipment that has not been used so far, ‘said Dr Sharma.’ It will be very convenient in the treatment of newborns and children. ‘

KMC has introduced giraffe omnibed incubator machine to keep the premature baby in the mother’s womb and high frequency oscillator ventilator to treat the lungs of newborns weighing less than 1 kg. Both these machines have been used by KMC for the first time in Nepal, claims Prof. Dr Sunil Raja Manandhar, Head of Pediatrics Department of the hospital. According to him, newborns born prematurely from 26 weeks to 28 weeks can be saved by using this device.

Narayan Dahal, general manager of KMC, says that the state-of-the-art equipment used by KMC will help reduce infant and child mortality. He says, ‘KMC has brought into operation the largest 40-bed NICU in Nepal with state-of-the-art equipment. There is no end to such a large NICU in Nepal. This will help reduce infant and child mortality. ‘

KMC had earlier been operating a 25-bed neonatal intensive care unit and a five-bed pediatric intensive care unit. By expanding the beds and using the latest equipment, KMC has made the intensive care unit of children the best in Nepal.
