16 killed in bus–tanker collision in Indonesia’s Sumatra

KATHMANDU: At least 16 people were killed after a passenger bus collided head-on with a tanker truck on Indonesia’s Sumatra Island on Wednesday, local authorities said.

The deadly accident occurred at around 12:39 pm local time on the Trans-Sumatra Highway in Karang Jaya district of South Sumatra province.

According to local media outlet Jakarta Globe, the long-distance intercity bus crashed into a tanker truck travelling from the opposite direction.

Rescue teams were immediately deployed to the scene following the collision.

Officials from the local disaster management agency said several passengers were trapped inside the wreckage, prompting an urgent rescue operation.

Rescue workers and traffic police continued clearing debris, identifying victims, and securing the area until late afternoon.

Authorities said providing medical treatment to the injured and ensuring safe evacuation remained the top priority.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the crash and confirm the identities of all victims.
