KATHMANDU: A protest erupted in Kathmandu against the Supreme Court’s decision to increase the riverbank construction limit from 20 to 40 meters.

Demonstrators demanded the cancellation of this new regulation, arguing it would displace many local residents.

Carrying banners with slogans such as “People cannot be made homeless in the name of regulations,” “Eviction of locals is unacceptable,” and “Action must be taken against encroachers of public land and rivers,” the protesters voiced their concerns.

The Supreme Court’s decision to extend the buffer zone has sparked strong opposition, with critics accusing the court of making an immature ruling on private property rights.

The government has since filed an appeal to reconsider the matter.
